A TIME TO BE BORN (Ecclesiastes 3:2) Ruby Elizabeth Hunter was born March 7, 1928, in Effingham County, Guyton, GA, to the late Joseph Hunter, Sr. and Elizabeth Jackson Hunter. She is the eldest of six children, all of whom preceded her in death. While in Savannah, she began her education in the Effingham County Schools and attended Savannah State College for two years.
A TIME TO LOVE (Matthew 19:5) On April 14, 1947, Ruby Hunter was united in marriage to Artis Lee Wilson; to this union, six beautiful children were born, four boys and two girls. Being a devoted wife and mother, in 1959 she followed her husband to the little town of Warner Robins, GA, and remained a resident until her demise.
A TIME TO SERVE (Act 20:35) In the mid-60's, Mrs. Ruby Wilson was certified as a pre-school teacher and began her teaching career as a substitute teacher at Pearl Stephens School. She was the first Head Start Lead Teacher for the Warner Robins Day Care Center where she was later appointed Director. During her administration and leadership, the program grew and expanded across the city. Three additional buildings were purchased to serve the community on the north side of town. Prior to retiring, a total of five facilities had been purchased to accommodate the program's growth. The name of the Day Care was later changed and is currently known as Cherished Children Education Center. In the mid 70’s, she continued her studies in sociology at Wesleyan College, in Macon, GA. After full retirement, she served as a Pink Lady Volunteer, at Houston Medical Center. As a believer in Jesus Christ and a member of First Baptist Church, Garmon Street, for more than five decades, she served in various capacities and ministries. She effectively served as clerk for twenty (20) years and became the first Girl Scout Troop leader at First Baptist. Other ministries include choir, ushers, and the women's ministry. For many years, she shared her arts and crafts skills during Vacation Bible School with children, youth and adults. Because of her varied contributions and service to the community, there are two published articles about her life and career. The first documentation appeared in the Family Edition of the Warner Robins Daily Sun, April 18,1976, and the second is a seven-page interview in the Houston County Black Heritage Society publication, dated June 30, 2022. The hobbies she enjoyed include reading, beautifying her surroundings, nurturing plants, crocheting, sewing, knitting, meal preparation, baking, mentoring others and being a master at crossword puzzling.
